Bioengineering Program Streams

Biological Materials, Mechanics, and Sensing examines physical properties and processes of biological systems, and how they are communicated via chemical, mechanical, and electrical signaling , from single biomolecules to organisms. Investigating changes in these properties and processes allows students to learn about a myriad of diseases, from cancers to neurodegenerative disorders. From an engineering perspective, the remarkable mechanics of natural biological materials can be used as sources of inspiration for next-generation synthetic materials. Students pursuing this stream will be prepared for a wide range of careers, including medical devices, biosensors, and biomimetic materials and mechanical engineering.

Biomolecular, Cellular, and Tissue Engineering applies engineering methods and paradigms to quantitatively image, measure, model, and manipulate biomolecules, cells, and tissues, and —using this engineering-level understanding— to optimize their functions, or design and build entirely new biological systems, with applications ranging from biomanufacturing and synthetic biology to organoids-on-a-chip. Students pursuing this stream will be prepared for a wide range of careers, such as medical diagnostics and health management, pharmaceutical industry from drug discovery to vaccine manufacturing, artificially synthesizing potent natural products, thus sustainably contributing to materials, energy, and food industry.

Biological Information and Computational Bioengineering introduces students to the fundamentals of information storage and processing in biological systems, from biomolecules, cells, tissues, organisms, and populations, resulting in computer-aided approaches, such as modelling and simulation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, applied in genomics and proteomics, drug discovery, immunology, neurology, and epidemiology. Students will also learn how to design computational tools for state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation. Students pursuing this stream will be prepared for a wide range of careers, from bioinformatics, pharmaceuticals, medical imaging and diagnostics, to epidemics management.
